The 10 Best Chinese Movies of the First Half of 2013

The year of 2013 brought us many fantastic Chinese movies to watch. And the second half of the year is likely to provide us with more great films, but for now, first check out my picks of the  top 10 Chinese movies for the first half of the year 2013.

1. Journey to the West: Conquering the Demons 西游降魔篇

Journey to the West Conquering the DemonsJourney to the West: Conquering the Demons is a 2013 Chinese entertaining action-comedy film directed by Stephen Chow and starring Wen Zhang, Shu Qi and Huang Bo. This movie is Stephen Chow’s return to the ancient Monkey King tales. It tells the story of how monk Tang Xuanzang conquer three demons -the water demon Shaseng, pig demon Zhu Bajie and monkey Demon Sun Wukong and also the dreamlike love between Tang and Lady Duan.

2. So Young 致青春

So Young“So Young is a 2013 Chinese romance drama directed by Zhao Wei. The movie is adapted from the best-selling novel “To Our Youth that is Fading Away“. The film is actress Zhao Wei’s film debut and proves to be a great success by obtaining 700 million Yuan at the Chinese box office.

3. American Dreams in China 中国合伙人

American Dreams in China“American Dreams in China is a drama film directed by Peter Chan and starring famous stars of Huang Xiaoming, Deng Chao, and Tong Dawei. The movie tells about how three young men start up an English-language training school in China in the 1980s and obtain great success. It is based on the true story of Yu Minhong, the founder and current CEO of New Oriental Education & Technology Group Inc., which is the leading educational service provider in China.

4. Finding Mr. Right 北京遇上西雅图

Finding Mr. Right“Finding Mr. Right” is a 2013 romantic comedy film starring famous actress Tang Wei and actor Wu Xiubo. The film tells about how a single pregnant woman gives birth to her child in America, meets and fall in love a male protagonist, Frank. The film was a box-office hit with income of US$83 million in China.

5. The Grandmaster 一代宗师

The Grandmaster“The Grandmaster” is a Chinese martial arts drama film directed by Wong Kar-wai and starring Tony Leung and Zhang Ziyi. The movie focuses on the legendary life story of  Yip Man, the Wing Chun master who trained Chinese Kung Fu star Bruce Lee.

6. The Chef, the Actor, the Scoundrel 厨子戏子痞子

The Chef, the Actor, the Scoundrel“The Chef, the Actor, the Scoundrel” is a 2013 Chinese comedy directed by Guan Hu and starring Liu Ye, Zhang Hanyu and Huang Bo. The story is set in old Beijing during the Second World War. Japanese army used a biological weapon “cholera” and everyone is at risk. Four Yangjing University graduates decided to obtain antidote from a Japanese scientist in a Japanese restaurant.

7. Switch 富春山居图

Switch“Switch” is a 2013 Chinese action film directed by Jay Sun and starring Andy Lau, Tong Dawei and Lin Chi-ling. The Movie tells a treasure hunting story that happens among Chinese agents, Japan gang and the United Kingdom thief. The film’s Chinese title is named after the treasure itself, an ancient Chinese scroll “Fu Chun Shan Ju Tu”.

8. Say Yes 101次求婚

Say Yes“Say Yes” is a 2013 Chinese romantic comedy directed by Leste Chen and starring Huang Bo and Lin Chi-Ling. It is a romantic remake of classic Japanese television series “Say Yes”.  The film tells the story that how a labor contractor pursue love of  a beautiful female artist. This is a cheerful, emotional, encouraging and a really good movie you should watch.

9. A Wedding Invitation 分手合约    

A Wedding Invitation“A Wedding Invitation” is a 2013 Chinese romantic comedy film. The film stars Bai Baihe and Eddie Peng. Li Xing and QiaoQiao are high school sweethearts. When they are about to graduate from university, Li Xing makes a proposal to Qiaoqiao but is declined by her,as Qiaoqiao has a devastating secret. they write a break-up contract and promise to get married if they are still single 5 years later. However, five years pass and when Qiaoqiao contacts Li Xing she receives his wedding invitation with another girl…..

10. Bring Happiness Home 快乐到家

Bring Happiness Home“Bring Happiness Home” is a 2013 Chinese film. It stars the hosts of the Chinese variety show Happy Camp. A dog named “Le Le” wins championship at a dog beauty contest and becomes a target of two thieves. Will it escape from from this dangerous situation?……

    This is really a great list of Chinese movies. I hope Chinese could also make movies like Hollywood.
