In the last article, we have shown you some tips to get started to Learn Mandarin. Once you have mastered the basic knowledge of the language, it’s about time to move to a more advanced level.
1. Pinyin 101
If you have not heard of pinyin before, then let me give you some information: Pinyin is system used for learning Mandarin Chinese. That’s exactly the way Chinese people learn the language at primary school. Learning pinyin can help you understand how to pronounce Chinese correctly. You can see pinyin in many Chinese learning textbooks and other teaching materials.
2. Learn the Chinese characters
For many Chinese learners, this is not easy. It’s important to understand this is not a short term process. Even for local Chinese people, it takes years to learn how to read and write Chinese characters. But to get started, it’s important to understand the difference between traditional Chinese characters and simplified Chinese characters. The traditional Chinese characters are used mainly in Hong Kong, Taiwan, Macau, when the simplified Chinese characters are used in Mainland China.
3. Find a language partner.
When you learn the basic knowledge of the language, in order to move to a more advanced level, you need to immerse yourself in the language environment. In your language learning process, it’s common to make many mistakes, so you need a person to give you feedback about your language. This is a very necessary step because the text book will not give you any feedback.
4. Sign up for a language course.
If you have been self taught yourself up to this stage, then you might feel it’s harder and harder to improve when you are already an intermediate language learner. Of course, you can keep doing it all by yourself. But if you got some budget, it’s highly recommended to sign up for a language course then you can learn the language more systemically. You will meet many friends in the classroom and if you have any questions during your learning process, you can ask the teacher immediately.
5. Why not taking a trip to China?
If you are currently in the USA or other western countries, you can consider taking a short trip to China. If you are still a student, I know there are many programs in the university that you can sign up for an exchange program with local Chinese universities. It will be more fun to learn the language while you are visiting different interesting places in China. The experience is rewarding.
