Shocking statistics: China rankings in the world
It is really shocking after knowing today China’s rankings in the world.
Currently, there are 232 countries and regions in the world, including 192 UN member states. The World Bank, FAO, WHO and other international organizations usually provide annual data and rankings for all 183 countries and regions. Because some countries and regions are either too small or no data recorded or can not collect statistic for perennial war, so they are not included in the statistics.
Based on world’s most commonly cited 183 countries and regions, which place does the mainland occupy in various world rankings of economic and livelihood today? We can easily get the rankings through various agencies under the United Nations. This post has collected some simple information on China’s global rankings, see below:
GDP: In 2010,China ranked world’s second, but in per capital ranked 127 at last but 55 in the world; while in 1978,China’s GDP ranked 17th in the world, ranked the 60th per capital, and last but 122 in the world.
Education investment % of GDP: In 2010, around 3%, lower than the world average 4%, less than Uganda in Africa; in 1978, the index was more than 5%, higher than many developed countries.
Health investment % of GDP: In 2010, 0.8%, well below the global average of 10%, and this percentage was up to 18% in the U.S., China ranked world’s last; 1978, the index was about 10% above the level of developed countries then.
Price level: in 2010, measured at purchasing power parity, the overall price level for China’s housing, agricultural products, electronic products and other categories were already fully over the United States, ranking first in the world; 1978, the price level was far below the global average level of developed and developing countries.
The gap between the rich and the poor: In 2010, the Gini coefficient was above 7.0, only lower than very few poor African countries, at the forefront of the world; 1978, the index was less than 0.2, was the world’s most equitable distribution of income and almost no wealth polarization.
Human Development Index: 2011, ranked 101, while Cuba and Venezuela ranked 60 or so; 1990,China ranked 92 globally,Korea ranked 85th. (Because the index calculation started from 1990)
Air quality data: In recent years, for PM2.5 index, North China and East China has been ranking the most polluted areas in the world.
