Top 10 Box Office Chinese Movies of All Time

At present, mainland China’s movie box office constantly set new records. In 2010, we still celebrated that Feng Xiaogang’s “Aftershock” and Jiang Wen’s “Let the Bullets Fly”  had hit 600 million Yuan box office. While in 2012, “Painted Skin 2” and “Lost in Thailand” had exceeded 700 million Yuan. Now let us have a look at the top 10 box office Chinese movies in history:

1. Lost in Thailand  (2012) 人再囧途之泰囧 – 721 million Yuan

“Lost in Thailand,” by by actor-turned director Xu Zheng only spent 30 million in the film making, but he already earned more than 700 million Yuan in less than two weeks after its release on Dec.12, exceeding “Painted Skin II ” as the China’s No. 1 box office movie.

The Flowers Of War“The Flowers of War” is Zhang Yimou’s epic drama set in Nanjing. The film grossed more than half a billion Yuan. That makes it become the fifth highest grossing Chinese film of all time.

6. The Flying Swords of Dragon Gate (2011) 龙门飞甲 – 540 million

“The Flying Swords of Dragon Gate” is a IMAX 3D film directed by Tsui Hark and starring Jet Li. The film earned more than 540 million at the box office across the country.

7. If You Are The One II (2010) 非诚勿扰2  – 473 million Yuan

This is another film by Feng Xiaogang in the list. His 2010 romantic comedy “If You Are the One II” stars Ge You and Shu Qi, the film was a huge box-office success with around 473 million Yuan in ticket sales.

“Back to 1942” is a 2012 Chinese disaster movie by Feng Xiaogang. The film tells about a big famine in China’s central Henan province during WWII, which killed about three millions people.

As for imported films, “Avatar” takes the first place with record box office of 1.39 billion Yuan! The No. 2 is “Transformers 3” with 1.089 billion Yuan, and the third is 3D version “Titanic” with 975 million.
